OUR founder's story
Bettering Belize has been years in the making, driven by a shared passion for supporting children. With over a decade of experience in the childcare and education fields, Amber and Chelsea always knew they wanted to make a difference.
In July 2022, they took their first trip to Belize together to celebrate Chelsea's birthday—a trip that would become the catalyst for Bettering Belize. On their last morning in San Pedro, while having lunch by the water, a young girl approached their table, selling handmade crafts to raise money for school. They felt compelled to support her, but that moment sparked a much deeper conversation. How could they give back to the community their mothers were born into in a meaningful, lasting way?
Over the next couple of years, they spoke with family and community members to understand the biggest challenges children faced. They learned that students were often required to pay for essentials like desks and even toilet paper. Determined to create change, Chelsea took the lead in navigating the legal process to establish Bettering Belize as an official nonprofit.
With the organization officially formed, they set their sights on the first research trip, scheduled for September 2024—a pivotal step in their mission to uplift and empower the children of Belize.
